The inception of the Historical Procession, that began in the mid-nineties, is an innovative aspect of great charm and fascination within the Maggiolata. The Organizing Committee of the festival decided that the attire of the walk-on actors taking part in the Historical Procession should be around the XIII-XIV centuries in order to achieve a precise relationship to significant events - recovered from eminent authentic historical sources - that occurred during periods of great political and military importance for the town.
One must remember that during the period between the beginning of 1200 to the end of the XIV century, Lucignano was the subject of conquest by the principal cities of the region: Arezzo, Siena, Florence and Perugia by virtue of its strategic position of notable importance to the territories of the cities referred to above. Through the study and the reconstruction of the military events that affected Lucignano in the two centuries considered, it is possible to define decorative aspects of the Historical Procession that recall to us elements in the styles of the period, recovered thanks to the artwork available in great quantity and to very precise historic sources. The reference to the styles of the XIII and XIV century is very clear from in the austere bearing of the musicians and the soldiers: the former were represented by drummers and clarion players (a sort of long brass trumpets without pistons), the latter from men-at-arms and from their captain in defence of the Prior or he who in antiquity held the economic power within the village. The second part of the procession consists of walk-on actors that represent the hierarchical social ladder of the commons of Lucignano, from the people to the aristocracy. All their clothes, headgear and shoes have been made by hand.
